San Antonio Food Bank Plans to Feed Thousands of Harvey Victims

With residents returning to Houston, there is predicted to be a strain on food pantries, and the San Antonio Food Bank is stepping up to help the first of many truckloads of supplies, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

"We stored some of their product at the San Antonio Food Bank warehouse, so now, we're starting to roll that back," Michael Guerra tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI.

Hurricane Harvey is expected to be one of the costliest disasters in U.S. history.  Accuweather has projected it to have a $190 billion impact on the economy.

Families who had been on a tight budget will likely be pushed into areas where they are forced to seek assistance.

Guerra says, until now, they have not been able to get help into the region, simply because of logistics.

"It's the first day we've been able to take donated water, diapers and pet food from San Antonio," he explains. He expects at least 100 truckloads heading east.

In the meantime, both evacuees and first responders are getting some much needed protein in their diets.  A group of competitive barbecue pit masters have set up shop in Houston, smoking meat for those hungry.

"We have state champions, world champions, and national champions right now in Houston, cooking awesome hot barbecue meals,” David Marks with Operations BBQ Relief says. They expect to serve 30 thousand meals a day.
