No Children Hurt in Spectacular Daycare Center Fire

Fast thinking by staffers and firefighters resulted in dozens of children being safely evacuated ahead of a fast moving fire at a northeast side daycare center, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The fire broke out at the Bright Kids Daycare at Wetmore and Thousand Oaks and quickly moved through the structure.  Smoke from the fire could be seen all across the city's northeast side.

"The first arriving crews found heavy smoke, and all the students and staff were outside," Fire Department spokesman Joe Arrington said.

He said about forty people were in the building when the fire broke out.No word yet on a cause, but officials marveled how quickly the fire spread.  The children were taken by VIA buses to a nearby apartment complex and were then taken to another day care center.

So far there is no word on the cause of the fire.  Dozens of fire units answered the alarm, due largely to the hot weather.
