Congressman Castro reacts to deaths of 8 in truck trailer

Joaquin Castro

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro has released a statement, following the discovery of 8 people dead in a truck trailer in San Antonio.

Castro said, "These deaths are tragic and avoidable. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones. I hope that those who remain hospitalized make swift and full recoveries. The smugglers responsible for the incident, who showed no regard for the lives of the people they were transporting, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Officials in San Antonio are calling it a human smuggling attempt gone wrong.

The eight, including two  children, were found in the trailer of an 18-wheeler in a Walmart parking lot on I-35 South in San Antonio.

Authorities say 30 others are hospitalized.  Fire officials  say at least 17 are critical while 13 are in serious condition, many  suffering from dehydration.

The driver of the truck is in custody.

McManus said police reviewed video from the store and saw several people had left the scene.
