No Democrat Challenger Emerges As Abbott Prepares for Re-Election Bid

Five Police Officers Killed During Anti-Police Brutality March In Dallas

Greg Abbott is expected to announce later today in San Antonio that he is running for a second term as Governor of Texas, but so far, no Democratic opposition is on the horizon, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Abbott will make his announcement this afternoon at Sunset Station.

Abbott was elected Governor in 2014, trouncing well-funded Democratic challenger Wendy Davis by 20 percentage points.

Since then, Abbott has built a sizeable campaign warchest, with $34 million in the bank in the January reporting period, expected to swell to as much as $50 million when the July reports are due later this month.

Even though Democrats have announced their candidacy for several other races, veteran Republican San Antonio Congressman Lamar Smith, for example, has five Democratic challengers, but nobody appears willing to take on Abbott for the top spot on the ticket.

In addition to having a sizeable campaign treasury and universal name recognition, Abbott is also by far the most popular politician in the state.  He is the only one of the state's major Republican officeholders who has more approvals than disapprovals in a recent Texas Tribune/University of Texas poll.

All of the others, from Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz to Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick, were 'underwater' in their approval ratings in the poll.
