US Department of Justice: New Texas Voter ID Law is Constitutional

Nation Goes To The Polls In Contentious Presidential Election Between Hillary Clinton And Donald Trump

The US Department of Justice ruled today that the newly passed Texas Voter ID law is constitutional, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The DOJ said the new Texas law 'guarantees Texas voters the opportunities to cast an in person ballot,' and protects the integrity of the elections.

The Legislature took action on a priority measure in the recent session which expanded the current Voter I.D. law, which has been declared unconstitutional by a federal judge.

The new law will allow voters to use various forms of picture and non picture ID.  The voters will also be requited to sign affidavits that they don't have a photo ID, which would make voter impersonation a crime.

This decision today does not mean the new law will not be challenged in the federal courts, it only means that the Justice Department will not challenge it.
