If you're a regular visitor to the San Antonio Zoo than you remember Tumbo, the playful Nile hippopotamus.

News Radio 1200 WOAI reports Tumbo has died at the age of 42.

After suffering from an undisclosed illness for the last month, Tumbo was euthanized Monday after taking a turn for the worse.

"Tumbo was a much-loved member of our zoo family who inspired and educated millions of visitors over the past 42 years," said Alan Kardon, Vice President of Animal Care.  "He was a beloved animal and the staff worked diligenty with him over the years to ensure he lived a full and healthy life."

The playful Tumbo was often seen in his underwater viewing area, and behind-the-scenes hippo feeding experiences.
