Three Local Law Officers Arrested for Drunk Driving

Two San Antonio Police Officers and one Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy were arrested following separate drunk driving wrecks overnight, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

About 10:15 Thursday night, Officer Gena Rodriguez, 39, an 11 year veteran of the SAPD and currently assigned to West Patrol, rear ended another vehicle on Loop 1604 near Culebra.

When officers arrived they discovered Rodriguez' 'speech was slurred and she was unsteady on her feet.'

They also discovered three children in the back seat of her car, including one in a child safety seat.

Police say even though one child had an injury caused by the accident, Rodriguez 'refused to let the EMT's treat her children.'

She was charged with DWI with an enhancement of having a child under 15 in the vehicle at the time.

About three hours later, Officer Harold Thomaston, 46, a 20 year veteran of the SAPD assigned to Central Patrol, ran a red light right in front of a police cruiser.

He was charged with DWI.

And then a couple hours later, a Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy was pulled over by an SAPD officer at Loop 1604 and I-10 and was determined to be driving while drunk.  Since she is a probationary deputy only on the job for eight months, proceedings have begun  to fire her.

Thomaston is free on $1200 bond, Rodriguez is free on $8,000 bond.

“DWI is so preventable," Chief William McManus said.  "I’m disappointed that these two officers would put public lives at risk by getting behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol. Both have been placed on administrative leave pending a full internal and criminal investigation”.
