Woman Indicted For Allegedly Phony Cancer Fundraiser

A Bexar County Grand Jury today indicted a woman on four counts of felony theft for staging and allegedly pocketing the proceeds, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The indictment claims Andrea Vasquez, 44, rented a downtown hall in October to stage an event for the San Antonio Chapter of a charity called 'THair for You,' which provides wigs to cancer patients.

But the charity says it never received a dime of the $20,000 Vasquez claimed to have raised.

Vasquez claimed that a charity called the 'Fashion for Cancer Foundation,' which turns out not to exist, was staging the event.

In addition, Vasquez is accused of writing $30,000 in bad checks to several vendors for goods and services used at the fundraiser.

Vasquez is no stranger to the court system.  In 2001, she was sentenced to ten years in prison for killing a woman in a drunk driving accident.
