Two Local Congressmen in a Hollywood-Style 'Road Trip' from San Antonio to Washington

It sounds like a story straight out of Hollywood.

Thanks to that nasty snow storm that hit the east coast, two Texas Congressmen had no luck finding a plane flight back to Washington D.C...

Their solution?  Road Trip!

U.S. Reps. Will Hurd (R-TX) and  Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) rented a Chevy Impala and drove the 16-hundred miles.  They didn't say which one is Bob Hope and which one is Bing Crosby 'on the road.'

"Usually when a Republican and a Democrat work together, it doesn’t make headline, but this happens all the time," Hurd tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI.

O'Rourke says this is what the nation needs at a time when our politics are more divided than ever.

"Talk about renewing people's faith in congress and the members who serve there," O'Rourke added.

While the two members of congress share districts along the Texas Mexico border, that's where their similarities end.  They're members of different parties. O'Rourke is white and Hurd is black.  O’Rourke is a musician.  Hurd is a former undercover agent with the CIA."

I've been trained in tactical driving, so I'll be doing most of the driving," Hurd laughs.

To pass the time, the pair decided to livestream their journey, using the app Periscope. The topics, as you can imagine on 24 hours, range from the inane, like Star Trek versus Star Wars, to the hyper-political, like Turkey's involvement in the United Nations.

This is not O'Rourke's first foray into the world of Periscope.  He used the live streaming app last year to broadcast a sit-in on the chamber floor when the c-span feed was pulled.
