A Girl Who is in the Process of Becoming a Boy Has Won the State High School Girl's Wrestling Title

A controversy at the Texas State Girls High School wrestling competition on Saturday in Cypress.  News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Mack Beggs, a 17 year old student who is making a surgical transition from female to male, swept the girl's tournament, and picked up the gold medal to both cheers and boos from the crowd.

Beggs has been undergoing surgery and regular testosterone injections to transition from female to male for the past two years.  The parents of several of the girls Beggs defeated to win the championship said it is not fair and dangerous for their daughters to have to compete against an opponent who is taking testosterone injections.

Many asked whether the UIL's decision to allow Mack to participate even after undergoing testosterone treatments now means the door will be open to any competitor at the high school level, male or female, who wants to get an 'edge' by taking what in many competitions is an illegal performance enhancing drug.

The UIL's Dr. Jamey Harrison says this is for the state to decide.

"That may well be addressed by lawmakers," he said.  "I don't speak for them, but we are certainly available to sit down and be a resource for them if they want to have that conversation."

Mack was allowed to compete in the girl's tournament despite lawsuits filed to keep Mack out, because currently the UIL has a 'birth certificate rule,' which says students participate in the gender of sports that is on their birth certificate.

Since Mack was born a girl, Mack competed in the girl's competition--and won.
