Tesla's massive Travis County plant is no longer required to follow Austin's environmental regulations. Under the terms of a new state law, the company successfully applied to de-annex the site from the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction. That jurisdiction applies to unincorporated areas within five-miles of the city limits. The city agreed last month to release nearly 21-hundred acres between the Colorado River and State Highway 130. Tesla's Giga Texas factory is exempt from Austin's air quality and water use policies.
