"Self-Induced Abortion" Charge Dismissed In Starr County

A South Texas prosecutor will not put a woman on trial for performing what arresting officers called a "self-induced abortion." The district attorney for Starr County announced yesterday that charges against 26-year-old Lizelle Herrera were being dismissed. The D.A. said his review of state law found that Herrera's actions were not a criminal matter. Few details about Herrera's Thursday arrest have been released, though the district attorney said the Starr County Sheriff's Office "did their duty" in investigating the incident after it was brought to their attention by a local hospital.
