Immigrant Rights Group: Child Died After Incarceration at Texas Camp

A legal group that helps immigrants has confirmed that a migrant child has died after being released from a detention center south of San Antonio, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

"What I can share with you is that AILA learned from a contact who was in touch with the family that the death occurred after the child and parent left Dilley," George Tzamaras, Senior Director for Communications and Outreach with the American Immigration Lawyers Association tells reporter Michael Board.

He would not share who has been in contact with the family, who the girl is or how she died.

The death was first reported by Houston immigration attorney Mana Yegani, whose twitter post went viral.

She claimed the toddler died "as a result of possible negligent care and a respiratory illness she contracted from one of the other children."

Manoj Govindaiah with the immigrant rights group RAICES says he does not know about this case, but he says the facility in Dilley has a long history of problems.

"In the last three and a half years, we, along with three other organizations, have filed class-wide administrative complaints, complaining about the medical care," he explains. "A group of children were given adult-doses of various vaccines.  The medical care continues to be problematic at Dilley."

He would not comment on whether the death of this migrant girl could result in litigation.
