Sharknapping Suspect Charged

Bond is set at $10,000 for Antone Sinclair Shannon, 38, who has been charged with a State Jail Felony for the theft of a horn shark from the San Antonio Aquarium on Saturday, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Shannon is charged with Theft between $750 and $30,000, and could face up to three years in prison.

Aquarium General Manager Jenny Spellman says Helen, the nearly year old shark, will remain in quarantine and could still suffer health problems from her ordeal.

"All the stress and the moving and water quality conditions, it could still effect the shark for another couple of weeks," she said.  "That is why it is still in quarantine."

Police say Shannon entered the Aquarium with two other people during a busy period on Saturday, grabbed the shark by the tail, wrapped it in a blanket, and then stuck it in a baby stroller.

But their cunning plan began to unravel from the start.  Spellman noticed water dripping from the baby stroller and followed the three out to their vehicle, writing down the license number.

She says Shannon was taking good care of Martha, in a huge aquarium in the garage of his home

."It is a 900 gallon tank," she said. "It is open top with a bunch of small tropical fish in it."

Spellman says in a way it is good for the shark that it was stolen by somebody who wanted to care for it.Police said Shannon had a horn shark in his aquarium before and apparently wanted a replacement.
