NEISD Says New Name for Lee H.S. 'Should Reflect an Idea, Not a Person'

So what do you think the new name of Robert E. Lee High School should be?

News Radio 1200 WOAI reports the North East ISD is soliciting public input on renaming the school.

The Board of Education voted last month to change the name of the 1958 vintage school, due to Lee's connections with the Confederacy and with slavery.

But North East says the new name won't necessarily be the name of a person.

"The Board set forth criteria that the name should reflect an idea, not a person," the district said, citing Academy of Creative Education, and International School of the Americas as two existing NEISD schools are follow that guideline.

Name submissions should embody a wholesome image that would be expected to stand the test of time," the district said.  "A proposed name should be welcoming and identifiable to the general public."

The District says this is not a popularity contest, and the new name will not necessarily be the one that gets the most support from the public.

Suggestions are being accepted through September 25th.

Several suggestions have already been made, including naming the entire school 'International School of the Americas,' after the successful magnet school which has been part of Lee for twenty years.

There have also been suggestions that the district could save money by keeping the 'Lee' name, and naming the school after somebody else named 'Lee.'  Author Harper Lee and civil rights advocate George Lee have been suggested.

The NEISD says the new name will be in place 'no earlier than the 2018-2019 school year.
