Homeland Security investigating discovery of 8 dead in San Antonio

Eight people are dead in Texas after  what authorities are calling a human smuggling attempt gone wrong.

The  eight, including two children, were found in the trailer of an  18-wheeler outside a Walmart off I35 South in San Antonio overnight.  Authorities say 30 others are  hospitalized.

Police Chief William McManus said officers responded to a  call from a Walmart parking lot.  An employee called police about  possible illegal immigrants after someone from the truck asked for  water.  Nearly 40 people were reportedly inside the trailer.   Fire  officials say at least 17 are critical while 13 are in serious  condition, many suffering from dehydration.

The driver of the truck is  in custody.  McManus said police reviewed video from the store and saw  several people had left the scene.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement is involved with the investigation.
