A tow truck driver is in critical condition after he was shot by a would be robber this morning, Newsradio 1200 WOAI's Michael Main reports.

It happened on the northwest side, near Callaghan and Flynn, which is just inside Loop 410 across the highway from Ingram Park Mall.

Police say the 40 year old victim was working on his truck about 1AM when an armed man approached, jammed a gun in the guy's face, and demanded money.

The man said he didn't have any money, and while they were arguing, the man's wife came out of the house to see what the commotion was about.

When the gunman wheeled to confront her, the man grabbed a tire iron.  But when he raised his arm to attack the gunman, the robber fired once, shooting him in the neck.

The man was rushed to the hospital.  The gunman fled and has not been captured.  The victim's wife was not hurt.
