An Oklahoma City man, who was part of San Antonio's most expensive jewelry heist, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.
Johnny Kirk, 44, was involved in the armed robbery of the Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry & Distinctive Gifts store in North Star Mall back in 2010, a crime his attorney says his client admits was a stupid mistake
"He's sorry," John Convery tells 1200 WOAI's Michael Board. "You heard him tell the court this he's sorry. He's the classic example of somebody who has lived a hard life."
The seven years is less than half what his partner-in-crime received. Marvin Steele, 47, was sentenced to 20-years in prison. The pair wore masks and were armed his guns when they burst into the store at ten in the morning. Steele stuck a gun in the ribs of one employee. Kirk apparently put the gun on the floor and told the employees that if they touched it, it would explode.
As part of the sentence, Kirk will have to pay back the $1,174,134.00 worth of jewelry they stole. Investigators caught a break in the case when Steele gave a friend some of the stolen loot, and that friend tried to pawn it.
Judge David Ezra explained that Kirk's shorter sentence will not be a walk in the park.
"He will serve what the U-S marshals refer to as hard time," he said in court. "He will not have a pleasant seven years."
